Welcome to the Sad Sacks portion of the Department of Florida web site.  Sad Sacks is the fun and honor group of the AMVETS.  We are the oldest subordinate organization of the AMVETS, being established at the 1st AMVETS National Convention in 1945.  Our name is derived from the character “Sad Sack” created by George Baker during WWII.

Eligibility requirements, to be a sad sack, are as follows.

  1.  Must have been an active member of AMVETS in good standing, for a period of not less than one (1) year.  There are no exceptions to this requirement.

  1.  Must meet two (2) of the following three (3) requirements:

  1. Must have held an AMVETS elected or appointed office at the local, department, or national level.
  2. Must have signed up five (5) new members in the year application is being submitted.
  3. Must have rendered outstanding service to AMVETS on all levels.

Nursing scholarship is the program of the sad sacks.  The program is funded by personal donations, in the form of fines (while having fun).  Scholarships are available to all individuals entering the second or above year of a nursing programThis list provides a better understanding of the relationship between some of the sad sacks and AMVETS officer titles.
